Sun Siyam Iru Veli’s Uma Jarga Magar: Passion for service

Hospitality is built on the ability to make guests feel welcome and valued. At Sun Siyam Iru Veli, Uma Jarga Magar plays a vital role in creating these experiences. Originally from Nepal, Uma has been working at the resort since January 2023, bringing a thoughtful and personal approach to her role as a Hostess.

Uma’s interest in hospitality started in Nepal. “Growing up, I always enjoyed the simple joy of serving others and making people feel welcome,” she says. Her first job in a small café introduced her to customer service, and she quickly realised the satisfaction of making guests happy.

The opportunity to work at Sun Siyam Iru Veli marked a turning point in her career. “Working in an international setting allowed me to refine my skills, interact with guests from all over the world, and truly embrace the art of hospitality on a much larger scale,” she explains. Since joining, she has focused on creating meaningful dining experiences for guests.

As a waitress, Uma’s responsibilities extend beyond taking orders and serving food. “My main role is to provide exceptional dining experiences for our guests,” she shares. From greeting guests and guiding them through the menu to ensuring a seamless meal service, her focus is on hospitality that makes visitors feel valued.

Uma also believes in adding personal touches to a guest’s experience. “I take pride in remembering a guest’s preferred drink, surprising them with a thoughtful table setting, or engaging with them in a meaningful way.” She sees these moments as opportunities to enhance a guest’s stay.

Uma has learned that adaptability is one of the most important aspects of hospitality. “No two guests are the same, and every day presents new situations that require quick thinking and a personal approach,” she says.

Being able to anticipate guest needs and adjust accordingly is a skill she has developed in her role. She believes attentiveness and flexibility help her provide a better service and create positive interactions with guests.

One of Uma’s most memorable contributions at Sun Siyam Iru Veli was a simple yet meaningful gesture. A departing couple had mentioned that they hoped to see dolphins during their stay but hadn’t been able to. Before their final dinner, Uma arranged a floral dolphin table art for them. “It was a simple but meaningful gesture, and they were so touched that they became emotional,” she recalls.

For Uma, hospitality is not just about meeting expectations but finding ways to make a guest’s experience special. “A kind gesture, a warm smile, or a handwritten note can express more than words ever could,” she says.

The work culture at Sun Siyam Iru Veli has played a role in Uma’s professional development. “The resort fosters a culture of excellence and teamwork, where every team member is encouraged to bring their best every day,” she shares.

She describes the team as a family, supporting each other and working together to provide quality service. “We rely on each other, celebrate successes together, and support one another through challenges.” This strong team dynamic allows her to focus on providing the best experience possible for guests.

Like many working in hospitality, Uma has faced challenges. One of the biggest has been the language barrier. “While English is not my first language, I have learned that body language, attentiveness, and genuine hospitality can bridge any gap,” she says. She makes an effort to connect with guests through service, ensuring that communication challenges do not impact their experience.

Another challenge is working in a fast-paced environment. Uma believes that staying calm under pressure and maintaining a positive attitude helps her manage her workload effectively. “I’ve learned to adapt quickly, prioritise tasks efficiently, and rely on my team to ensure everything runs smoothly,” she explains. She sees challenges as opportunities to improve and grow in her role.

Uma remains committed to improving her skills and contributing to Sun Siyam Iru Veli’s hospitality experience. She follows a simple motto: “Let all that you do be done with love.” Through her dedication and personal approach, she continues to make dining experiences memorable for guests at the resort.

Her journey is a reminder of how attention to detail, adaptability, and a genuine passion for service can transform a simple interaction into a meaningful experience. Uma’s story reflects the essence of hospitality—making guests feel welcome, valued, and remembered.
